Pediatric Care for Congenital Heart Disease
From newborn through adolescence, children with congenital heart problems are cared for by pediatric cardiologists. Vincent Zales, M.D. is co-director of the Congenital Heart Disease Program, and was formerly director of the cath lab at Children’s Memorial Hospital at Northwestern and chief of service at Deborah Heart and Lung. Dr. Zales has been in practice as a board-certified pediatric cardiologist since 1987 and works alongside a team of pediatric cardiovascular specialists from K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital who diagnose heart defects and help manage the health of children before and after surgical repair of the heart problem.
Adult Congenital Heart Disease
The number of adults living with congenital heart disease (CHD) is growing each year, and is now greater than the number of children living with CHD. Dawn Calderon, D.O. is Director of the program at Jersey Shore, and has been fellowship-trained in Adult Congenital Heart Disease at Cleveland Clinic. When reaching adulthood, it is important for patients born with CHD to transition to this level of subspecialty care. Adults with CHD require unique clinical guidance for planning key life milestones such as college, employment, family planning, pregnancy, and beyond.
