The 3rd year surgery clerkship at Jersey Shore is open only to RWJMS students. We share a common curriculum with the other RWJMS clerkship sites, and offer a rich educational experience. As a high volume community hospital service we offer a broad exposure to clinical general surgery which gives the serious student the tools he/she will need to accrue a strong knowledge base as well as an understanding of the important role of surgery in treatment of disease. The faculty is positive and enthusiastic, and enjoy the student contact. Students work closely with RWJMS residents as well as faculty, and every effort is made to have them function as part of the surgical team. The students have an opportunity to develop procedure skills such as sewing the skin, tying sutures, placing foley catheters and removing drains. Didactic sessions are held in New Brunswick on Wednesdays and supplemented with clinical sessions with the surgical faculty.
