The Department of Pediatrics at Jersey Shore University Medical Center offers a six week core pediatrics clerkship for students at UMDNJ-RWJMS. We share a common curriculum with the clerkship site at RWJMS, including core lectures and all clerkship requirements. Our rotation offers the chance to participate in the care of a balance of patients from all walks of life and socio-economic groups. On our inpatient unit we have a large volume of medically complex patients. Outpatients are seen in our many subspecialty clinics and at our Family Health Center (FHC), and in the offices of community pediatricians. Students are mentored and given individual attention and coaching by faculty who are dedicated to teaching: they have the opportunity to critically discuss in-depth patient management during their weekly meeting with the site director and also participate in “family-centered rounds.” These rounds encompass the 6 required competencies of the medical school curriculum. Bedside rounds and small group discussions are a priority as is the delivery of culturally sensitive care.
