Department Coordinators & Electives
Applying for Electives
The majority of electives offered at Jersey Shore require registration through Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS). These electives are found in the RWJMS Elective Book on the RWJMS Web site. These electives are only open to UMDNJ-RWJMS students, UMDNJ-SOM students, and other allopathic students from LCME accredited medical schools. Contact the office of the UMDNJ-RWJMS Registrar, Mr. Dan Ostin at by email.
All students (with the exception of RWJMS students), must submit a letter of good standing and support from their dean, and a copy of their immunization record. A criminal background check is also required to do a rotation at Hackensack Meridian Health.
For All Other Medical Students
Osteopathic students and students from Ross University, St. George University, and Guadalajara University may register for unique electives (not listed in the RWJMS elective book), which are available on a limited basis. Medical students wishing to take these electives must do so by contacting individual departments. Electives located at Jersey Shore which are listed in the RWJMS Elective Book become open to all osteopathic and the 3 off-shore schools, one month prior to the commencement of each elective.
When You Arrive At Jersey Shore
When you arrive for your first day at Jersey Shore, you will be given information from the departmental coordinator about obtaining your ID badge, security, beepers (this varies by department), your Freedom Pay meal cards (meals are free to students), a secure area to lock your valuables, and parking. Parking for students is in the Rosa and Brennan lots.
