Ocean Medical Center is home to more than 100,000 honey bees who inhabit three hives on the medical center’s rooftop bee apiary. Beekeeper, Dr. Greg Mazzatta and Ken Souchek explain that bees are an essential part of the food chain and the importance of protecting the bees from disappearing from the environment. Bees also make delicious honey that is not only known for enhancing foods but it also used for health and medicinal purposes. According to director of sustainability, Kylie Trafuri, the roof top bee apiary is part of Hackensack Meridian Health’s sustainability initiative. Hackensack University Medical Center’s children’s hospital (Joseph M. Sanzaria Children’s Hospital) has had a bee apiary since 2016. Story appeared in the Asbury Park Press on September 21.
