Cardiac Calcium Scoring Test

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among men and women. That's why it is so important to know your risks and symptoms.

To evaluate your risk of a heart attack, your doctor may recommend calcium scoring. Specifically, the state-of-the-art Computerized Tomography (CT) calcium score scan checks for plaque build-up in your coronary arteries as an early sign of heart disease. It is done quickly and the results are sent directly back to your physician. A high score means you have a higher risk for a heart attack or other coronary conditions, and may impact treatment recommendations from your doctor. Just as important, a very low calcium score is associated with a very low risk of arteriosclerosis and heart attack.

Calcium scoring is non-invasive and does not require and pre-medications.

Most insurance companies do not cover this test, but you should inquire with your doctor about discounts available at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

If you have some of the traits below, please ask your doctor about calcium scoring:

  • Family history of coronary artery disease

  • Past or present smoker

  • History of high cholesterol, diabetes, or high blood pressure

  • Overweight
