Four Super-Nutrient Foods

No food guarantees a long life. But these four are rich in disease-fighting nutrients.

SALMON AND OTHER FISH
Salmon and other fatty fish may lower men’s risk of prostate cancer because of their omega-3 fatty acids. Fish also may help prevent stroke.Try cooked salmon with honey-mustard sauce: Combine mustard with honey, red wine vinegar, and hot pepper sauce to taste.

BROCCOLI
Foods rich in beta-carotene, such as broccoli and spinach, may help lower your risk of cataracts. Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, such as cauliflower, also may protect against certain types of cancer. Top cooked broccoli with toasted bread crumbs or Parmesan cheese.

WHOLE GRAINS
Diets rich in whole-grain products can lower your risk of developing diabetes. Whole grains also reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease — and can prevent constipation.Use whole-wheat bread for sandwiches.

TOMATOES
Tomatoes can discourage cancers of the lungs, stomach, and prostate. In addition to the tomato salad recipe in this issue, try drinking tomatoes in juice or soup.
