New Rehabilitation Center Gets Patients Back on Their Feet
After my knee replacement, I
expected the rehabilitation facility
to look and feel more like a hospital,"
says 82-year-old Frances Kondratiuk
of Hazlet. "But I was blown away with
how warm and comforting the surroundings
and rooms are here — it's like spending
time in a hotel, rather than a rehabilitation
center." Frances, who had her
right knee replaced at Riverview Medical
Center in December 2007, entered the
new Meridian Nursing and Rehabilitation
Center in Shrewsbury for her recovery.
Exceptional Care in a Modern Facility
"The one thing that didn't surprise me
was the care I received," Frances states.
"I expected the same quality medical
care that I received at the hospital to be
continued here, and it was. It gave me great peace of mind to learn that the facility
and staff were all part of Meridian Health."
"We ensure a seamless progression of
care from the hospital to the rehabilitation
setting and then to the home, so patients
can worry less about the details and focus
more on their recovery," explains Brian
Corliss, administrator of the new center.
The Meridian Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center at Shrewsbury provides
post-hospital and surgical care, physical
rehabilitation, and long-term residential
health services. Offering therapy seven
days a week, the center's new state-of-theart
rehabilitation gym features all the latest
technology and equipment staffed by certified
physical, occupational, and speech
therapists who specialize in orthopedic,
geriatric, neurological, and cardiac care.
The center also includes extensive amenities
such as entertainment and activity programs, flat-screen televisions in every
room, a gift shop, family lounges on every
floor, and multiple dining rooms with restaurant-
style menus.
Special Focus on Orthopedic Patients
Among the many features at the center is
a dedicated unit for orthopedic patients.
Specializing in postsurgical care for total
knee replacements, hip replacements, and
fractures, the orthopedic unit includes 14
private rooms, its own dining room, and
a private family lounge. "We recognize
the special needs for orthopedic patients
like Frances, who typically lead active
lives they are anxious to get back to,"
remarks Jennifer McIntyre, director of
Rehabilitation Services.
"Through this new, dedicated unit, orthopedic
patients receive targeted, individualized
care and specialized services in a
wonderful environment while they recover
and look to regain their independence,"
says Bernard P. Murphy, M.D., who successfully
performed Frances' knee replacement.
"The staff really took a team approach
in providing me with my very own personalized
care plan," says Frances. "For
such a short stay, I really felt like I was
part of the family."
