Caring for Aging Parents? You're Not Alone
Ann Petronaci of Brick faced a
challenge in deciding what was
best for her 76-year-old mother,
Jeanne Uhl, who lived in Florida and
was experiencing declining health. "I
didn't know where to turn for help or
whom I could trust to ensure she would
be taken care of properly," explains
Ann. "I was afraid that she wasn't being
cared for in the way that she deserved,
and I felt guilty for not being there
because I lived so far away."
A Trusted Source for Care
To find answers, Ann turned to her
physician, Thomas E. Lozowski, D.O.,
a board certified family medicine practitioner
who has treated Ann's family
for three generations. Dr. Lozowski
recommended that Jeanne be brought
from Florida to Ocean Medical Center
for a complete medical assessment. "Ann
told me her mother couldn't carry on a
conversation, wasn't making any sense,
and couldn't remember anything. Ann said
she wasn't getting clear answers from her
mother's doctors, and that's what frustrated
her most," recalls Dr. Lozowski.
"My sister and I went down to Florida,
packed Mom's things, and flew her up
to New Jersey," says Ann. "Once in New
Jersey, we took her straight to Ocean
Medical Center, where she was diagnosed with metabolic encephalopathy and a
urinary tract infection." The next step was
choosing somewhere for Jeanne's rehabilitation
and long-term care.
According to Ann, the fact that Meridian
Nursing and Rehabilitation at Brick is located
right on the campus of Ocean Medical
Center, and that Dr. Lozowski serves as the
medical director, made her decision simple.
"The ability to have a skilled and caring doctor
consistently monitoring the care of my
mother — in a facility that I trust — enabled
me to start sleeping again," she says.
Welcome To the Family
"We consider our patients family," says
Pam Costanzo, director of admission for
Meridian Nursing and Rehabilitation.
"Whether they are here for a short stay to
get back on their feet or need long-term
support, our compassionate and skilled
staff members go the extra mile to make
them feel right at home."
After receiving the appropriate medication
and rehabilitation, Jeanne now
agrees that being in the right place has
a positive effect on your health. "I can't
say enough about this place," she adds.
"There is so much care and compassion
shown by everyone that you feel like you
are the center of everyone's undivided
attention."
