The Philosophy of Training
The internship at Jersey Shore University Medical Center reflects a commitment to the practitioner-scientist concept of doctoral level professional psychologists. Behavioral Health Services provides a professional setting in which training is pursued primarily within the experiential sphere. The emphasis is on the development of intermediate, to advanced level clinical skills, through supervised experiences in the application of theoretical and empirical knowledge. Interns learn to apply clinical strategies based upon empirically supported theories of the conceptualization, measurement, and treatment of psychological disorders. The psychology training staff serves as referents for the effectiveness with which these strategies are applied, and help to shape and refine the intern's developing professional style and skill. The acquisition of new knowledge through research also is emphasized by exposure to applied research opportunities within rotations, primarily regarding program outcome and service delivery issues.
