OB/GYN Residency

At Jersey Shore University Medical Center, birth is a joyous celebration of life. We join with the families of our community in that celebration and offer our support and caring. From a holistic model of family-centered maternity health care, we empower families to grow and develop through the antepartum, birth, postpartum, and neonatal experience. Through childbirth education and the highest standards of practice, we provide families with the skills and resources to begin this journey. We recognize and respect individual cultural beliefs and customs. With a strong foundation in our family-centered maternity care, we envision a future of optimal health for the individual family and the community that we serve.

The highly skilled nursing staff has received the prestigious Magnet Award from the American Nurses Association and joins an elite group in the country that have achieved that recognition. The nursing staff works collaboratively with our physicians as a cohesive team to deliver excellent patient care. In addition, the camaraderie between the nursing staff, resident physicians and attending physicians is evident when you walk into the department.

The regular nursery is staffed by specialized maternity nurses. There is close collaboration between the nurses, the pediatric house staff and the OB-GYN housestaff.

The nursery staff work closely with the NICU and any infant requiring monitoring, respiratory support, IV antibiotics or fluids, or other specialized care is transferred to the NICU. Infants requiring phototherapy for uncomplicated hyperbilirubinemia remain in the nursery.

All newborns have a hearing screen and a newborn metabolic state screen done prior to discharge. Hepatitis B vaccine is offered to all infants. Circumcisions are performed by the obstetricians. Lactation support is provided by the maternity nurses. Social work consultation is provided to any infant and mother unit requiring support and home visiting nurses are also arranged if further support is required.

Jersey Shore is also the only hospital in Monmouth and Ocean counties accepted as a full member of the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions, and is home to the most advanced pediatric sub specialists in the region.
