Director's Introduction

Welcome to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, located on the Jersey shore, 45 minutes south of New York City.

Andrew Blechman, M.D.

We are proud of our resident teaching program. We are fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. We have all the subspecialties of obstetrics and gynecology and offer a complete program under one roof. At Jersey Shore University Medical Center, we have the best features of a university hospital and the best features of a community program. We are academic and affable.

Our residency consists of 12 residents, 3 per year. They are a close knit group of people who work well together. They are a diverse group of men and women from many religions, backgrounds, and creeds. They have cordial relationship with dedicated faculty. The department and institution are committed to resident education and faculty development. Two members of our faculty have been selected and taken part of the prestigious Association of Professors in Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO)/Solvay Educational Scholars program.

Our program is innovative but not new. Ob/Gyn residents have been trained at our hospital since 1960. In 1905, the Ann May Memorial Homeopathic Hospital and training school for nurses was established. In 1927, a $500,000 donation allowed for expansion to the Raleigh Fitkin-Paul Morgan Memorial Hospital. Over the years the institution continued to expand and grow adding services and departments. In 1984 we became a core teaching hospital with a university affiliation. In 1997, the hospital joined with two other New Jersey hospitals to become the Meridian Healthcare System. Our hospital has grown from 50 beds in 1905 to a 502-bed regional medical center today, and a $300 million dollar expansion is well under way. Our services include one of the top cardiac surgery programs in New Jersey, regional trauma center, women and children's health, orthopedics and rehabilitation, comprehensive cancer care, and much more. And as a member of Meridian Health, we are able to provide our communities with a complete range of health services and facilities unmatched in our area.

We are proud of our hospital, our department, and proud to be part of the tradition of more than 100 years of service to the people of New Jersey.
