Dental Student Clerkships

The Dental Student Clerkship offered by the Department of Dentistry is designed to expose the third year dental student to hospital dentistry, dental practice and the benefits of completing a General Practice Residency Program.

During the two week clerkship, the dental student shall observe the following:

  1. Completion medical history as required for hospital admission
  2. Interpretation of significant findings in a patient's medical history and physical evaluation in both clinic and inpatient charts
  3. Interpretation of medical laboratory evaluations
  4. Formulation of medical risk assessments on patients
  5. Evaluation and formulation of dental treatment plans for at least three medically compromised patients
  6. Management of emergency medical treatment
  7. Requesting and answering consults
  8. Observation of the management of patients treated in the operating room
  9. Writing admission orders, discharge orders and progress noted in patients' charts
  10. Dentistry's role in the hospital environment
  11. Hospital organization and protocol including delineation of privileges and relationships between various hospital services.
