Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation Hosts 33rd Annual Sports Classic Golf Tournament

On July 11, Peter Cancro, founder and CEO of Jersey Mike’s Subs, chaired Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation’s 33rd annual Sports Classic Golf Tournament at the Deal Golf and Country Club and Hollywood Golf Club in Deal, NJ. The sold-out event hosted 260 golfers, and raised a record-breaking $340,000 in support of cardiovascular programs and other areas of greatest need at Jersey Shore, part of the Hackensack Meridian Health family. Bob Mullen, chief executive office of Structure Tone and J. Scott Ferguson, vice president of Carrickmore, served as co-chairs.

Jersey Shore is the region’s leading provider of cardiac care, offering the most complete range of heart and vascular services – from prevention and diagnosis to advanced surgery, rehabilitation through recovery. “We can’t lose sight of how fortunate we are to have this level of care right in our backyard,” explained Peter Cancro. “This event was the most successful golf outing in Meridian’s history and I couldn’t be more proud of the community for contributing and supporting Jersey Shore’s tradition of excellent cardiac care.”

In addition to enhancing its cardiovascular services, Jersey Shore continues to expand with the upcoming HOPE Tower – a $265 million dollar building development on the hospital’s east campus that will provide a new healing outpatient experience for the community. Scheduled to open in 2018, the new ten-story building will include a comprehensive cancer center, outpatient imaging services, a clinical academic center, an innovative simulation laboratory, pediatric services and a nine-level parking garage with more than 1,500 new parking spaces for patients.

The Sports Classic committee is grateful for the generous support of leadership sponsors this year, which includes the Event Sponsor, Jersey Mike’s Franchise Systems, Inc., Tournament Benefactors, L.F. Driscoll and Structure Tone, Inc., and Outing Sponsor, Little Silver Electric, Inc.

K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital Raises $140,000 During Superhero Soiree

The annual Superhero Soiree, hosted by K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, took place on Friday, April 29 at the Molly Pitcher Inn in Red Bank, NJ and raised $140,000 for pediatric palliative care. During the event, Kyra Citron, director of the Kid’s Corner at Charles Lafitte Foundation (CLF), was presented with the Hometown Hero Award and Charles K. Dadzie, M.D. a pediatric pulmonologist at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, received the Physician Hero Award. The Hero awards are presented annually to honor philanthropists and leaders in the community for outstanding service to others in Monmouth and Ocean counties.

Charles K. Dadzie, M.D. is one of the founding fathers of K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital. He came to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in 1982 to deliver a speech about respiratory failure in children and ended up joining the team in 1983. “It is quite humbling to receive the Physician Hero Award,” explained Charles K. Dadzie, M.D. “I’ve been a part of the Jersey Shore team for over 30 years and have always been motivated by the philanthropic community leaders who have helped shape K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital. It’s a true honor to be recognized among this highly regarded group.”

Each year, proceeds from the Superhero Soiree benefit K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital, ensuring the most advanced, compassionate care from birth. All funds raised at this year’s event will be dedicated to strengthening pediatric palliative care for children and their families with chronic illnesses and life-threatening medical conditions. The goal of the Pediatric Palliative Care Program at K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital is to add life to the child’s years, not simply years to the child’s life.

The Superhero Soiree was chaired by Vince and Denise Puma and generously supported by our Title Sponsor, The Charles Lafitte Foundation, and our Caped Crusader Sponsor, C.R. Bard.
