Olivia's Story

olivia_bigEight years ago, Olivia Canada was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, better known as COPD. Despite her condition, she has always been able to manage her disease and maintain her active lifestyle, until she suffered pneumonia in October 2011. Although she recovered from pneumonia, Olivia suffered from debilitating conditions as the pneumonia severely worsened her COPD.

“It was hard to do just about anything. I couldn’t walk more than ten feet before I had to stop,” says Olivia.

After seeking help from her pulmonologist, Olivia was advised to enroll in the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.

In December 2011, Olivia started her individualized exercise program, which was developed after she completed her initial assessment. “In the beginning, rehab was very difficult, but the team at Jersey Shore did such a great job supporting me and pushing me. Every day I felt stronger and stronger,” she describes.

Olivia finished the program in March 2012 and has had nothing but positive results. In addition to being able to return to the gym on a regular basis, she’s been able to enjoy the simple things like cleaning her house and making her bed without limitations.

Even though Olivia’s finished with her program, she continues to attend the monthly support group meetings that the program offers, to learn more about managing her condition as well as sharing her story with others in similar situations.

Olivia explains, “I’ve come such a long way from where I started. The program brought me my life back.”
