Stroke Treatment & Rehabilitation Care Center
About Our Stroke Treatment & Rehabilitation Care Center
Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and is leading cause of long-term disability. One occurs every 45 seconds. When stroke symptoms occur, every minute counts.
Effective treatment delivered within the first three hours is critical to limiting the damaging effects of stroke. Jersey Shore's Stroke Rescue Center and board-certified neurologists are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And comprehensive rehabilitation services and home care are available for follow up care.
Call 911 immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms of stroke:
- Sudden weakness or numbness, especially on one side of the body
- Difficulty speaking or understanding
- Sudden vision changes
- Dizziness, balance problems, or difficulty walking
- Sudden severe headache
Jersey Shore University Medical Center is the only hospital in the region to be both a state-designated Comprehensive Stroke Center and a nationally accredited Primary Stroke Center. This means Jersey Shore meets the highest national standards for safety and quality. This is quite impressive considering less than 5% of hospitals in the nation meet these rigorous requirements. Treatment may involve multi-disciplinary teams of specialists, who are adept at working together in a variety of settings from the endovascular lab, to the operating room, to the catheterization lab to interventional radiology.
Jersey Shore has developed a regional service, offering the most advanced treatment options when interventional procedures and surgeries may be needed.
With one simple call, emergency specialists from area community hospitals can call the Meridian Transfer Center to coordinate transportation for these advanced cases:
- Subarachnoid Non Traumatic Hemorrhage
- Aneurysm or Arteriovenous Malformation
- Complex Ischemic Stroke (IA tPA; MERCI)
- Intracerebral Hemorrhage
Neuro specialists work closely together on a range of procedures across specialties and disciplines in the new state-of-the-art hybrid operating room. This includes 3-D bi-plane imaging which allows clear viewing for the surgeons to place devices or perform surgery with greater precision and accuracy.
Known as stroke rescue, these procedures are groundbreaking and the operating room technology allows surgeons to perform:
- Endovascular and surgical repairs of cerebral aneurysms and AVMs
- Intracranial stenting and angioplasty
- Stroke rescue procedures such as clot retrieval
- Combined open and endovascular procedures as clot retrieval
