Internal Medicine Residency Program
at Jersey Shore University Medical Center
The Department of Medicine at Jersey Shore University Medical Center offers a fully accredited three-year Residency Program in Internal Medicine with 42 Categorical and 10 Preliminary positions for a total of 52 medical house officers. Residents interact regularly with fellows in cardiology, endocrinology, geriatrics, infectious diseases and hematology/oncology, as well as residents from other departments: dentistry, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, pediatrics, psychiatry, and surgery.
The goal of our program is to help our residents achieve their full potential on the road to becoming clinically proficient, academically-oriented physicians.
Training at Jersey Shore University Medical Center has the breadth and flexibility to allow residents to practice primary care, continue on to subspecialty training, or pursue careers in management, academia, or clinical investigation.
The educational philosophy that drives our program is based on the notion that there are three key components essential for successful maturation as a medicine resident: an economically and culturally diverse patient population; a supportive faculty who serve as role models providing superb care for their patients; and progressive opportunities to increase responsibility for management of patient care.
The residency strikes what we believe to be the perfect balance between inpatient education and ambulatory training, the latter representing approximately 1/3 of the residency experience. In addition to general medicine and critical care, each resident in our program will rotate through every subspecialty of Internal Medicine. Ambulatory experiences in dermatology, ENT, gynecology, urogynecology, orthopedics, adolescent medicine, sports medicine, and medical rehabilitation round out the program. Each medical subspecialty strives to be a Center of Excellence.
24 full-time and 23 part-time physician-educators form the core of the salaried teaching faculty. 40 are subspecialists and inpatient generalists while seven are primary care internists. All serve as role models and mentors and some spend a significant portion of their time in clinical research. The dedicated voluntary staff of approximately 270 physicians contributes time to attending rounds, teaching conferences, and electives.
The Medicine residency program includes daily lectures, a journal club, morbidity and mortality conferences, and nationally renowned guest speakers. Numerous faculty members are engaged in clinical Research. All categorical medicine residents are required to become involved in scholarly activities and complete at least one project during their tenure at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
Learning how to teach is a crucial part of residency training. Over 100 Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) Medical students rotate through our department for Introduction to Clinical Medicine, required third year clerkships and, as seniors, for subinternships and electives. In fact, over the years, Jersey Shore has been the busiest site for the RWJ clerkship. Students have raved about Jersey Shore residents and last year honored four of our residents at a special dinner of appreciation.
The best test of a program's strength is in its achievements. Over the past 10 years, 97% of graduates have passed the ABIM certifying examination on their first attempt. And, while historically, approximately half of our graduates have pursued careers in primary care and half have pursued fellowship training, in recent years a higher percentage are choosing fellowship paths. All are enjoying fulfilling and rewarding careers. Many have stayed or returned to practice at Jersey Shore. Some have found their way into the ivory tower of academia.
