Welcome to the Graduate Medical Education Programs at Jersey Shore University Medical Center . Jersey Shore is the teaching hospital of Meridian Health,a six hospital Health System located in Monmouth and Oceancounties in New Jersey. Jersey Shore has experienced a period of rapid growth and change over the past five years. We offer patient centered primary care as well as cutting edge, technologically sophisticated care to residents of New Jersey.
Jersey Shore University Medical Center is the major teaching hospital of Meridian Health and sponsors ACGME accredited residency training in Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Internal Medicine. These three programs have achieved maximum accreditation from the ACGME, as has our Institution as a whole.
We are especially pleased with our recent ACGME commendations for innovation in resident education. This record of accomplishment is unique in New Jersey. At Jersey Shore, we are proud that ALL of our residency programs EXCEED the ACGME requirements.
Our Pediatrics residency has dual accreditation from both the ACGME and the AOA and we offer a Sports Medicine Fellowship through the Department of Pediatrics. Medical education, both on the undergraduate and graduate level, post-graduate levels is one of our highest priorities. At Jersey Shore we strive to meet all of these requirements through innovation. Our residents all receive training in PI and PS. We take pride in our teamwork and increasingly employ programs such as TEAMSTEPPS and CREW RESOURCE management to foster communication between team members. We use simulators to improve residents’ clinical skills, and employ actors from “Arts Across America” to help residents hone their interpersonal and communication skills through practice in clinical scenarios. While we strive to provide new generations of physicians, with training in cutting-edge medicine we consider their acculturation as humanistic, compassionate and empathetic caregivers and team members of equal importance. All incoming residents at Jersey Shore create a Professionalism Oath during orientation week, which they recite at a welcome lunch ceremony for new trainees and their families during Orientation Week.

Our trainees are provided with close supervision commensurate with their level of training in a warm and supportive environment where teamwork and interdisciplinary care are encouraged and taught. Our faculty is known for their skill in clinical teaching, and for the individual attention they give to our learners. Duty hours are strictly enforced and duty hour violations are not tolerated. The patient catchment area for Meridian is very large, and the sickest patients are usually transferred to Jersey Shore for care. Our patients come from all ethnicities and walks of life. Through hands-on experience on our busy clinical services, simulation exercises in our Sim lab, didactic sessions, workshops and on-line modules, our residents become skilled in caring for patients with a broad spectrum of disorders in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Our ORs and technology are state–of- the art, and our OB/Gyn residents receive excellent surgical and obstetrical training, including training on our DaVinci Robot devices.
Training in evidence based medicine, and critical interpretation of the medical literature is also stressed. Our residents are all expected to engage in a mentored research project during their training, and projects and posters are presented at Research Day.
Of course, the educational experience at Jersey Shore is not without its lighter moments as we are situated in one of the most beautiful ocean resort areas in the country. At Jersey Shore, we appreciate the crucial role our residents play in daily patient care.
