Educational Conferences

Jersey Shore University Medical Center
Our educational framework consists of a combination of supervised clinical care and formal didactic teaching programs. Many of these conferences are held on Tuesday mornings, with others scheduled throughout the week.. The residents are expected to attend the various conferences and have 'protected time' so they can attend without distractions.

Obstetrical Core Lecture Series
This continuing series of lectures is based on the educational objectives outlined in CREOG's Core Curriculum. The lectures are given weekly. The residents present the lectures with faculty member support in a round table forum. The topics include:

Gynecologic Core Lecture Series
This continuing series of lectures is also based on the educational objectives outlined in CREOG's Core Curriculum. The lectures are given weekly. The residents present the lectures with faculty support in a round table forum. The topics include:

Maternal Fetal Medicine Core Lecture Series
This continuing series of lectures is also based on the educational objectives outlined by the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine. The lectures are given weekly. The residents present these lectures with Maternal Fetal Faculty support in a round table forum. The topics include the four major subgroups of patients:

• MFM diagnostic or therapeutic procedures
• High Risk patients with medical and surgical disorders
• Healthy gravidas with fetuses at markedly increased risk of adverse outcome
• Any antepartum patient admitted for "other than delivery" and patients with postpartum complications

Pathology Conference
Given on a monthly basis. Theodore Matuelewicz, M.D., chairman of Pathology, presents interesting cases for the residents to evaluate and discuss. The forum is interactive and educational.

 Grand Rounds
This is a traditional academic grand rounds attended by the residents, medical students, faculty, voluntary faculty, and members of the OB-GYN health care team and physicians from other departments in the hospital. Distinguished educators from all around the nation present formal lectures. Subjects can cover such diverse topics as ethics, business, research, patient care, public health, risk management, professional liability, and cultural diversity.

Journal Club
Articles from the current medical literature are chosen for presentation and discussion. The residents, medical students, and faculty gather for a lively exchange of ideas. We focus on how to critically and analytically review published articles. We expand our medical knowledge and our skills in systems based learning. We discuss statistics and study design and share practical advice about research design and publishing.

Resident Research Day and Research Meetings
These conferences are held monthly for the residents to present to the faculty and the other residents. It is a chance to share their research plans, study design and data in preparation for Resident Research Day. Once a year the residents, faculty and alumni get together to have the residents present their research projects. Many of these projects get published or presented at national meetings. It is the culmination of the academic year for the residents.

GYN Oncology Core Lecture Series
This monthly conference is during the protected academic hours. This continuing series of lectures is also based on the educational objectives outlined in CREOG's Core Curriculum. The lectures are presented by the faculty support in a lecture. The topics include:

Repro/Endocrinology Core Lecture and Conference
This monthly conference is held during the protected academic hours. This continuing series of lectures is also based on the educational objectives outlined in CREOG's Core Curriculum. The information is presented by case discussion and faculty lecture. The topics include:

Urogynecology and Pelvic Floor Reconstruction Conference
This bimonthly conference is held during the protected academic hours. Pelvic anatomy is reviewed and complicated vaginal surgery cases are presented.

OB/PEDS Quarterly Meeting
This is an M&M conference where obstetricians meet with pediatricians and discuss difficult cases. We look at our medical errors and discuss strategies to improve the care we provide.

Ultrasound Practicum
This is a one-on-one tutorial in ultrasound. Each resident receives instruction from a member of Maternal Fetal Medicine. The tutorials are spread over all four years so that residents improve their ultrasound skills continually.

MFM Strip Conference
Fetal monitoring strips are presented as a case presentation. The category 2 and 3 fetal monitoring strips are dissected in an interactive forum.

GYN Conference
A wide variety of topics are covered in this informal hour-long session. The residents select topics and speakers from the hospital and local community are invited to present the material. The topics covered this past year has included:

Simulation
Each year, we travel to Somerset, New Jersey to participate in a full day teaching session provided by ETHICON, a division of Johnson & Johnson. Residents and faculty are given the fantastic opportunity to operate on anesthesized pigs. It is a chance to learn laparoscopic techniques and practice with innovative medical devices.

Simulation experiences are conducted throughout the year. There are lab sessions to practice surgical techniques including suturing, fourth degree repair, amniocentesis, hysteroscopy, and laparoscopy. There are interdisciplinary exercises conducted with the nursing staff on shoulder dystocia, catastrophic hemmorhage, eclampsia and seizure, c-section/hysterectomy, anesthesia complications, and cord prolapse.

CREOG Review
Each morning before the sign-out session, one resident will give a 15 minute presentation on a topic that was presented in the last CREOG Examination. Test taking techniques for multiple choice examinations are reviewed with the material.
